Choose the Fixture by the Lighting Effect

Landscape lighting works best when each fixture is chosen for the job it needs to perform. Rather than starting with fixture appearance alone, think about what you want to illuminate, where the fixture can be installed, and how visible you want the light source to be.

Path lights spread light downward around walkways, planting beds, garden borders, and transitions.

Uplights and spotlights direct light toward trees, architecture, stonework, signs, and focal features.

Flood lights provide broader illumination where a wider beam is appropriate.

Well lights sit at or near grade for low-profile uplighting where minimizing fixture visibility is important.

Downlights illuminate from above and can create natural-looking pools of light or moonlighting effects.

Deck and step lights provide low-level illumination around stairs, railings, posts, and elevated outdoor spaces.

Hardscape lights tuck beneath caps, ledges, retaining walls, seat walls, and other architectural surfaces.

Build With the Entire Low-Voltage System in Mind

Fixture selection is only one part of a complete landscape-lighting system. Lamp type, fixture count, transformer capacity, wire gauge, cable length, connections, controls, beam spread, and color temperature all affect the finished installation.

Many Total Light fixtures are designed around replaceable LED lamps, allowing the fixture and light source to be selected separately. Always check the individual product specifications for the required lamp, installation method, and other model-specific details.

After installation, make final aiming and placement adjustments after dark. This is the best time to identify glare, hot spots, unwanted spill light, uneven coverage, or areas that need additional layering.
