Build A Light: Plan a Complete Landscape Lighting System
Building a dependable low-voltage landscape lighting system is easier when you plan the major components together. 1. Start With the Lighting Effect
Choose fixtures based on what you want to light: paths and planting beds, trees and architecture, steps and decks, hardscape features, or a combination of areas around the property.

2. Choose Compatible LED Lamps
For fixtures that use replaceable lamps, confirm the socket type, operating voltage, physical fit, color temperature, light output, and beam spread before ordering.
3. Size the Transformer
Add the connected wattage of the planned lights, consider practical reserve for the system, and account for wire-run length and voltage drop. Multi-tap transformers can help compensate for longer runs when the system is designed appropriately.

4. Plan Wire Runs & Connections
Choose landscape-lighting cable based on the system load, run length, layout, and voltage-drop considerations. Use outdoor-rated connections designed for the installation environment.

5. Add Controls & Accessories
Complete the system with the controls and installation accessories your project requires, such as timers, photocells, mounting components, stakes, and other system parts.
