Landscape Lighting Maintenance Checklist: Fixtures, Lamps, Wire & Connections

Landscape lighting changes with the property around it. Plants grow, fixtures get bumped, lenses collect dirt, irrigation patterns change, wire can be exposed by landscape work, and replacement lamps can introduce different output or color temperatures.
Routine maintenance is therefore less about “tuning up” every component on a fixed calendar and more about keeping the system clean, correctly aimed, electrically intact, and matched to the current landscape.
How Often Should Landscape Lighting Be Checked?
There is no single maintenance interval that fits every property. A sheltered residential system may need less attention than a coastal, heavily irrigated, professionally maintained, or frequently renovated landscape.
Useful times to inspect the system include:
- after seasonal plant growth
- after storms or flooding
- after edging, planting, irrigation, or hardscape work
- when a fixture becomes dim, dark, or misaligned
- when timers or photocells no longer operate at the expected times
- whenever a buried wire route or connection may have been disturbed

1. Walk the Property After Dark
Start maintenance with the lighting effect, not the hardware.
Look for:
- dark fixtures
- dim sections
- flickering
- new glare
- fixtures aimed away from the target
- path lights hidden by plant growth
- hot spots or dark gaps that did not exist before
- different color temperatures within one visible zone

2. Clean Exterior Lenses and Fixture Surfaces
Dirt, pollen, mulch, hard-water deposits, salt, insects, and plant debris can reduce or distort the light leaving a fixture.
Before cleaning:
- de-energize the lighting system
- follow the fixture's cleaning and maintenance instructions
- avoid harsh chemicals, abrasives, or tools that can damage the lens, gasket, brass finish, coating, or seal
Clean exterior lenses, shields, louvers, and accessible surfaces as the product permits. Do not open sealed or internal optical compartments merely because a generic maintenance article recommends “cleaning the reflector.”
3. Remove Leaves, Mulch, Soil, and Plant Debris
Keep fixture openings, lenses, shields, and adjustable joints clear of accumulated landscape material.
Pay particular attention to:
- well-light lenses and covers
- path-light shades
- uplight lenses and shrouds
- hardscape-light openings
- fixtures near mulch or active garden beds
Do not pile mulch or soil over a fixture or connection that was designed to remain exposed or serviceable.
4. Trim Plant Growth Around the Light Pattern
Plants can block a fixture long before anything is electrically wrong.
Check whether:
- a path-light shade still clears the surrounding planting
- a shrub has grown in front of an uplight
- tree growth has changed the spotlight or downlight target
- foliage blocks a photocell's view of ambient light
- roots or planting changes have disturbed fixture stakes or wire routes
Trim only as appropriate for the landscape. In some cases the better solution is to reposition the fixture or change stem height rather than repeatedly cutting the plant back.
5. Re-Aim Fixtures That Have Shifted
Stake-mounted uplights, spotlights, and adjustable fixtures can move because of soil settling, animals, mowing, planting work, or accidental contact.
After dark, check the beam from important viewing positions and correct:
- glare into windows or seating areas
- light aimed above or beyond the target
- a hotspot caused by a fixture moving too close to the target
- a beam blocked by new planting

6. Inspect Replaceable Lamps
When a compatible fixture uses a replaceable MR16 or G4 lamp, check the lamp only after de-energizing the system and following the fixture instructions.
When replacing a lamp, match:
- base type
- fixture maximum wattage
- operating voltage
- physical clearance
- beam angle where applicable
- 2700K or 3000K color temperature where visual consistency matters
Do not increase wattage simply because a fixture seems dim before checking the lens, aiming, voltage, and surrounding plant growth.

7. Check Exposed or Disturbed Wire
Landscape cable can become exposed after erosion, planting, edging, animal activity, or renovation.
Look for:
- visible cuts or abrasion
- cable pulled from a connection
- wire exposed by erosion or digging
- routes that now cross a maintenance or traffic path
Do not simply cover visibly damaged wire back with soil. De-energize the system and repair or replace the damaged section using cable and connections appropriate for the installation.
8. Inspect Known Connection Points
Use the project's as-built map to inspect accessible splice locations when a branch is dim, intermittent, or out.
Do not open every buried connection as routine maintenance if the system is operating normally. Instead, investigate when the symptom or recent landscape work points toward a splice.
If a connector needs replacement, match the conductor combination, voltage, environment, and installation method. Do not improvise a failed seal with electrical tape or loose silicone.

9. Check Path-Light Stability and Stem Clearance
Path lights should remain upright and their shades should remain above the surrounding planting.
Check for:
- leaning stems
- loose tops or shades
- soil movement around the stake
- plants blocking the light pattern
- fixture positions exposed to mower or string-trimmer traffic

10. Check In-Ground and Well Lights for Drainage Changes
An in-ground fixture can be affected by changes in grade, mulch, soil, debris, or drainage.
Inspect:
- whether the lens remains clear
- whether soil or mulch has covered the fixture
- whether water now collects around the fixture
- whether the finished height has changed
- whether the fixture remains serviceable
Do not assume an outdoor or in-ground fixture is intended for continuous submersion. Follow the individual product requirements.
11. Inspect Brass Finish Without Treating Patina as Damage
Solid brass can darken, tarnish, or develop green/blue-green patina outdoors. That surface change is not the same as iron rust and may be an intended part of the fixture's natural weathering.
If the homeowner prefers the natural aged appearance, maintenance can focus on functional cleaning and inspection. If a brighter brass look is desired, use only finish-care methods appropriate for the fixture.

12. Check the Transformer Externally
Keep the transformer accessible and inspect the external condition without opening or servicing line-voltage components.
Look for:
- debris or plant growth around the cabinet
- a damaged door or enclosure
- visible power-cord damage
- disturbed low-voltage cable entries
- signs of overheating or water intrusion
- controls that no longer operate as expected
If the issue involves line-voltage wiring, the supplying receptacle/circuit, or internal electrical components beyond the product instructions, use a qualified electrician or service professional.
13. Check Timer, Photocell, or Astronomical Control Operation
Controls need a different type of maintenance from the fixtures:
- Mechanical timer: verify clock and ON/OFF schedule.
- Astronomical timer: verify ZIP code, time, event settings, and offsets.
- Photocell: verify the sensor still sees representative outdoor light and is not illuminated by the lights it controls.

14. Measure Voltage Only When the Symptom Calls for It
Routine maintenance does not require probing every fixture. Measure voltage when the symptoms suggest a distribution problem—such as fixtures becoming progressively dimmer along a run or a branch behaving differently from the rest of the system.
Use an appropriate multimeter, stay on accessible low-voltage test points, and compare the result with the actual lamp or fixture operating range.

15. Inspect After Landscaping, Hardscape, or Irrigation Work
One of the best maintenance habits is checking the lighting immediately after other contractors work on the property.
Look for:
- cut or exposed wire
- fixtures moved by planting crews
- new irrigation spraying fixtures or photocells
- hardscape covering a service point
- new plants blocking beams
- connection points disturbed by excavation

16. Inspect After Severe Weather
Storms can shift soil, knock fixtures out of aim, bring down branches, create standing-water areas, or expose cable.
After severe weather, de-energize and inspect any visibly damaged portion of the system before normal operation resumes.

Should I clean the inside of landscape-lighting fixtures?

Why did my landscape lights get dimmer?
